The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a joint survey to determine the range of coal particle sizes found in dust samples collected from intake airways of US coal mines. The last comprehensive survey of this type was performed in the 1920s.

The results are presented of a recent coal dust particle size survey to determine the range of coal particles sizes found in dust samples collected from intake airways from 47 U.S. coal mines in MSHA's ten bituminous coal mine health and safety districts (see figure 1).

In the United States, current rock dusting requirements remained largely unchanged since 1969. US Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Section 75.403 is based on a coal dust particle size survey performed in the 1920s and later was supplemented by full-scale testing of the rock dust ability to inert a coal dust .

In 2007, the results of the dust survey in US mines showed that the coal dust present in mines today is much finer than those existing in mines in the 1920s (Sapko et al. 2007). Another danger of ...

Aug 18, 2018· Basically, from mining to coal cleaning, from transportation to electricity generation to disposal, coal releases countless volumes of dust into the air, land and water. Needless to say, as Earth is a closed system, when anything within the system is disturbed, in this case the coal seams, it emits numerous toxic pollutants into the immediate ...

Jul 01, 2007· This paper presents the results of a recent coal dust particle size survey to determine the range of coal particle sizes found in dust samples collected from intake airways in 50 US coal mines in MSHA's 10 bituminous Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts (see Fig. 1). (MSHA District 1 covers anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, which do not require rock dusting.)

However, coal production, like all other conventional mining activities, creates dust in the workplace. Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) comprises the size fraction of airborne particles in underground mines that can be inhaled by miners and deposited in the distal airways and gas-exchange region of .

The authors also recommended that, "In view of current results from the NIOSH coal dust particle size survey in US mines and preliminary size analyses of rock dusts, the effect of rock dust particle size in preventing coal flame propagation should be re-examined through large-scale explosion tests." Since the nature of coal dust explosions ...

Sep 01, 2017· 1. Introduction. Respirable dust is the fraction of airborne particulates that can be deposited anywhere in the lung gas-exchange region ().While the size range of respirable particles is specific to an individual, for the purposes of dust sampling and regulatory limits respirable dust has been operationally defined as particles having an aerodynamic diameter < 10 μm and a median cut point (d ...

Jun 11, 2020· They mandate that the nation's bituminous coal mines maintain an incombustible content of at least 65% in the non-return (intake) airways and at least 80% in the return airways where the potential for accumulation of finer float coal dust is greater. The US regulation also requires an additional 1.0% incombustible by weight for each 0.1% ...

Dust particle size has the greatest influence on the propagation (coal dust) and inhibition (rock dust) of dust explosions. Samples collected from the MSHA rock dust survey (as discussed in the 2011 NIOSH Hazard ID), were multi-modal, and several samples appeared to have wide variations in the amount of effective finer particles.

May 01, 2020· Among the top ten worst coal mine disasters in India, nine are due to coal dust explosion. The current paper describes a general overview of the parameters causing dispersion leading to coal dust explosion, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation study to observe the effects of particle size on dispersion in Indian coal mines.
