Central Machinery (Harbor Freight) Model 5980 Multipurpose Machine. This is a combination mill, drill and lathe that I purchased from Harbor Freight in September 2007. I use this machine in my knifemaking so I thought it might be of interest to other knifemakers to provide a little review.
Harbor Freight Tools sells two versions of the mini lathe. The Central Machinery model 93212 mini lathe is a 7x10 mini lathe. (Harbor Freight uses a different kind of ruler from everyone else when measuring their 7x10 mini lathe because it is actually 4 inches shorter than the 7x12 mini lathes.)
A nice mill and/or lathe will turn up sooner or later. Check your local Craigslist, newspaper, and Ebay. It took me nearly 4 years to get my lathe and mill, but the wait was worth it. JET 12X36 lathe for $500, and a MILLRITE for $900. I've heard bad things about those mill/lathe combos.

May 24, 2005· I have one of the HF 12x36 as does a friend and we have both had good experiences with the lathe. The chuck/lathe interface can be a bit problematic but with a little tuning my friend can get the 3J down to ~0.002 runout, I have to work a little harder to reach that.
I have had my Harbor Freight 7x10 mini-lathe for over two years now and have been pretty happy with it. I am an inventor and experimenter and I use the lathe mainly for making special parts for devices that I am experimenting with. Most of these parts are fairly small and short, so the 7x10 has sufficient capacity for most of my needs.
